Nation’s Restaurant News is reporting that Subway franchisees in Washington D.C. are taking their stores in a new direction. Starting next month, a more upscale version of the neighborhood sub spot will open in Alexandria, VA, featuring paninis, baked goods, and coffee, in addition to the signature sandwiches.
Subway spokesman Les Winograd said the cafe concept is “a test that our people in the D.C. area are doing, and it’s something that right now we can’t give great details on because it’s still in the early planning stages.”
Could this be a response to the lagging food industry, or perhaps a growing competitor? We’ll see. If the ‘test’ works, you could see more Subway Cafes opening in your area.
