The Wonder of Sydney’s Wunderlich Lane: The EVE Hotel

Sydney’s Wunderlich Lane is the talk of the town this season. The neighborhood gem at the corner of Surry Hills and Redfern suburbs is flush with food and drink destinations amid lush greenery and warm design. All the eateries anchored at Wunderlich are sought-after spots, though Olympus Dining has a weeks-long waitlist while Bar Julius might be able to get you in. Nestled on a rooftop, Lottie, with its contemporary Mexican menu, certainly has the best view of them all. But to truly enjoy a visit to Wunderlich Lane, you must experience the grandeur of the EVE Hotel.

Hotel rooms you’ll never want to leave

What originally drew me to book at the EVE Hotel was the design of not only the hotel itself, but the rooms as well. With a gorgeous color scheme – ochre or eucalyptus depending on your room – the rooms are designed for maximum use. The Juliette balconies, just enough to step outside and enjoy the weather and the sounds of Sydney, offer enough of an outdoor experience that you never feel confined to the room. The bathroom area is stylishly built with a three-quarter-tall boundary of seating and storage on the room side with sinks, storage, and mirrors on the bathroom side, shiny tiles lining the half-circular shower and toilet area. In all my travels, it might be the best-designed hotel room I’ve ever seen.

“Supporting local designers, artists, and manufacturers was at the heart of our design for The EVE. Enriched with layers of Australiana, the design incorporates deep maroons, ochres, and eucalyptus greens and blues.” says Charlotte Wilson, co-lead of SJB’s Sydney interior design team.

At the pool with a side of tacos and sun

When I arrived, the fall weather was just kind enough to allow for some pool time. The rooftop pool at the EVE is stunning. Gasp-worthy. The type of pool where people who aren’t staying at the hotel want to sneak into (and much to their dismay, are deterred by numerous security measures). When you arrive at the top floor, elevators open into the lobby of Lottie, where delish Mexican flavors from chef Alejandro Huerta waft through the air. To the left is the bar, to the right is the art-deco sliding door revealing the pool and all its glory. Poolside snacks from Lottie are available along with water, towels, and even a few sunscreen options. Easy lounge tunes flow through outdoor speakers (and even underwater in the pool) as guests enjoy the sun rays.

In the city but a world away

I wasn’t familiar with the area (only my third time in Sydney), but I found Redfern to be a soft spot amid the city’s metropolis. Greenery abounds, not only from the walls and windows of the hotel, but along the streets and nearby neighborhoods. Even while lounging at the pool, the sounds of the city seem to shuffle away into the distance, making the stay feel like a true getaway. Boutiques, restaurants, and coffee shops abound along every street surrounding the hotel, and popular tourist destinations, like the Sydney Opera House, are a short ride away (tip: rideshares in Sydney are significantly cheaper than taxis). And at the end of a busy day – feet weary from walking, arms rosy from the penetrating Australian sun – a return to the quiet, thoughtful, cozy EVE Hotel is everything.
